gojim
Over a period of twenty years (from its formation in 1987 until its disbanding in 2007), the music group gojim (i.e. non-Jews) from Vienna devoted itself to the extinct culture of East European Jewry. In collaboration with historians, contemporary witnesses and international archives, the group created stage programs with significant political value. It is a response to the continually growing racism and anti-Semitism in Europe.
In their stage show "Ess firt kejn weg zurik" (There is no way back) the gojim performed the last moments of Vilna, the "Jerusalem of Lithuania".
“The music group gojim does not want to simply reproduce tradition and continue with it. This kind of absorption is not its intent. gojim is and remains unique. Beyond this fact, they found a new and very particular approach to Jewish music. Based on historical studies, their interpretations create a very special atmosphere of sound, which may fill the gap between the past and present.”
